Opportunities

Thank you for your interest in joining the Bao Group! We believe diverse cultural backgrounds, technical expertise, and experiences lead to an environment with multiple perspectives, enabling us to tackle complex problems and generate creative new ideas.

Due to the large number of email inquiries, we are not able to respond to every email. Prospective group members should get in touch according to the guidelines below. Please note that incomplete inquiries may not be reviewed.

Postdoctoral positions

All applicants seeking a postdoctoral position should send: a cover letter outlining their expertise, research interests and expected starting date; a CV; a detailed slide deck on their research; and contact information for 3 references and their relationship with the applicant. Applicants are encouraged to list potential fellowship award sources they may be eligible for. Please email Professor Bao and copy Ena Luis with the subject line "Bao Group Postdoc Application".

Graduate students

Interested students should apply through Stanford Graduate Admissions in their chosen department. At Stanford, students are admitted through departmental admission instead of direct admission to a specific research group. Once admitted, students are encouraged to contact Professor Bao early, with the subject line "Admitted PhD Student" to check possible suitability and rotation opportunities (if required by the student's home department). Students at Stanford can carry out their PhD thesis in any department. The Bao Group currently has graduate students from Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, Biosciences, Bioengineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and MD/PhD programs.

Undergraduate students

Stanford undergraduate students seeking a research placement may email Professor Bao and copy Ena Luis. 

In line with Stanford's policy, external undergraduate students may only undertake a research placement over summer. The group typically accepts external undergraduates through Stanford programs such as SURF. Interested students should check the list of available programs for their eligibility.

Visiting students

We sometimes host visiting graduate students. The minimum duration for the stay is six months. Interested students should contact Ena Luis with the subject line "Bao Group visiting researcher inquiry" with the potential dates for your visit. Please note Stanford charges a registration fee each month.
